This ones only 4 1/2" because my chainsaw is dead and this was the only blank lying around.
Mounted on a screw chuck turned the profile of the bowl and the chucking recess on the bottom then finished it with lacquer based friction polish. The texture was done with a sewing transfer wheel I found around the house. All sanded to 600g. Flipped it over and chucked it in the recessed and hollowed and finished the inside. It brought some satisfaction to my day. What more could I ask for?
Thanks. I really like how that sewing tracing wheel works on that wood. Wish it was a little more heavy duty though. Texturing really is a cool addition. I've always enjoyed your textured bowls and thought maybe I could get a texture with the transfer wheel.
That's a beautiful little bowl Neg! The texturing looks nice and that wood has some fantastic color. Just curious, is the transfer wheel still useable or did the wood texturing ruin it? My wife has one of those but I don't want to get in trouble with her.
Nice bowl. Texturing looks great as does the bark/knot/split. Good idea with the sewing wheel thing. As soon as my wife goes to bed, I'm going 'shoppin' in her sewing drawer....
Thanks guys. The sewing tracing wheel is just fine. I plan on using it on more turnings in the future. I don't think it would damage the tracing wheel at all as long as you approach at the right angle. You can vary the texture by changing the angle of the wheel in relation to the wood. I even got kind of a spiral pattern on a piece of scrap. Speed makes a difference as well.
