these 3 pieces were my first attempts turning with large viods, boy talk about a learning experiance. my hands were all cramped up from holding my tools to tight.
and for sanding i used a kitchen sponge for sandpaper backing
Hey Red, beautiful pieces! What were the (approx) dimensions of your blanks for something like this? The only actual blanks I've ever used are the skinny little pen blanks. Now that I have some actual logs I'm trying to figure out what to do with them
all 3 of these pieces were started from logs, the one in this pic was about
4" in Dia. before i started turning. stuck between centers so i could turn tenons on the bottom, then transfered to the chuck
Nice pieces, big red. Red cedar is one of my favorites. The knots can be a little touchy, but look good. One issue I've had on a few pieces is pitch coming through the finish on the knots. I found I need to sand and seal them real well first, then do the finish coats.
