Carved Walnut Bowl, 6 3/4" dia. x 6" tall. Finished with Tung Oil. This is my first attempt at scalloping a turning. Still needs to be buffed out and waxed.
That is very pretty, Chris. I assume this is done by turning a rather thick walled bowl then carving out the scallops?? So how thick are the thickest parts of the scallops? I love the color of this walnut. Around here we get very dark, black walnut.
Hey Mike, thanks. You're correct, you start by turning a piece thick enough to have some mass left at the carved area. I believe this started at 3/8" or so thick. The part to remember is to turn the body so that the circumference is a number easily divided into equal parts so that you can lay out the scallops. Once laid out, I used a V shaped microplane to carve the troughs to depth then used a die grinder (a dremel could also be used) with a barrel shaped bit to roll the scallops over. Sand with a barrel sander in the dremel and then final sanding by hand. The entire piece was about 5 hours.
