This piece is about 12" tall and is made out of Carolina Cherry with Claro Walnut (from Spinner)for the end caps and the center spinner. The center band easily spins up and down the twisted shaft on the maple inserts. I guess this is one way to have a captured ring!
I tried to update the photo and it deleted the original photo.
I tried to replace my picture with a better shot and I accidentally deleted the original picture along with the attached comments. Sorry to those who commented.
I say it again, the accuracy is pretty sweet Jay. Inquiring minds want to know, was this completely done by hand or by mechanical means? Glad you found a use for the walnut...it was pretty sweet to turn, wasn't it?
Thanks for the comments. It was a combination of power tools and some hand work. I used a router to cut initial grooves and then finished them off by hand. I was inspired by the twist on the barber pole and wanted to have some motion to it. Adding the "spinner" to the outside was the way to give it motion. This was fun to turn and the walnut turned nice.
this brings a whole new meaning to the term "hourglass"!!! that is really cool...... very very nice piece... the attention to detail on those twists is way cool!!!
