This is the biggest hollow form I've attempted. The hollow form is spalted hackberry and the lid is claro walnut. Both pieces have turquoise filling. It measures 10" in diameter and 4 1/2 inches tall not counting the lid. The lid is 2 1/4" in diameter and 2 1/2" tall. The whole thing is finished with gloss poly. I'm going to put on a last coat of semi-gloss or perhaps sand with about 2400 grit micromesh to soften the shine a little. I call this piece Genesis. Please give me your comments and suggestions.
Don't you just love hackberry. Beautiful piece. I am not much of a shine person so I am glad to hear your going to soften it. Nice form and well executed.
Beautiful....simply beautiful. I also am wondering about this turquoise? What is it exactly, and how does it work? Can you provide a link to where I could possibly get some?

I don't normally like turquoise fill, but you've done a great job with this piece. I'm thinking that the addition of color on the lid makes it work for me. I think I would prefer the lid to be flatter, more in line with the curve of the HF. That's a minor concern though. The piece is beautiful. 8-)
Bert, the turquoise I used is real turquoise. The kind used in jewelry. I put larger junks in a blender and "crush" it. Then I sift it to different sizes from powder to large pieces. I try to use some of the largest pieces that will fit in the space I'm filling. Then I fill around that with small sizes and then powder. Finally I use thin CA glue to fill in the gap. I use a dremel or sanding disk to sand the turquoise down just below the wood surface and then sand the wood on the lathe to match the turquoise.
Very nice and their is a not going on the the grain as you can see. Beautiful piece, but please don't take this personally... I myself don't care for turquoise as a filler. I prefer the shaving of what I'm turning and "try" to blend it in as I finish sand a piece. Excellent job here, it turned out nicely.Wizzy
Ken,
I personally love the contrasting colors between the turquoise & the wood. The shape & form are excellent. Although I'm not a fan of the finial it looks to squat it makes the piece seem for lack of a better term "heavy" I think if you had a taller & thinner finial it would look better.
I'm normally not a huge fan of turquoise inlay but this piece is the exception. I think it is well done and the inlay works well with the entire piece. Just my opinion...
