I know this is not wood but it turns pretty good if you start with an aluminum rod close to the right size, I didn't. I started with a rod 7/8" and should have started with a 5/8" rod. The top is a platinum cigar pen and the bottom is a chrome baron.both are coated with automotive lacquer. Hope you like them.
Thanks guys. Yep, I turned them with a 1/2" spindle gouge and a scraper. I can't believe that I didn't say what they were made of, good guess Rev. I have edited my remarks to say what they are made of.
I don't know smoky's reason, but I coat aluminum items because over time it dulls easily and quickly. The lacquer helps keep the shine up longer and stronger.
Nice looking set, Smoky.
Aluminum corrodes (oxidizes) just like steel, except that the residue is a white powder, not red. A clear coat of "whatever" will help hold off the corrosion.
