simple vase made from compound stave cut cherry on top and bottom, and curly maple segments for the neck, foot and feature ring. 62pcs. about 6in.x11in.
I've always liked these two woods in combination. It breaks the rules of segmenting as your staves are running one way and your maple top band & top segments are running the other. Will you watch the vessel thru a few heating cycles and let us know how it fares.? One sees/hears many rules and sometimes they really need following and other times one can work other ways.
michelle, i knew that going into this one so i tried to keep the walls fairly thin to reduce movement. hopefully it will stay together and to everyone else, thanks!
yep Brian, I hope it does too. I am trying to research this type of construction and failure rates. I have been breaking the established rules in bottom of vessels for years. I started way back in the dark ages, and had no reference, so I make solid bottoms on my pieces. Despite the rules of wood movement, I have never had a failure. I've got one here that is 8+ inches in diameter and even at that size and a thick seg wall, it hasn't moved or broken in any way. Are the rules just passed on without merit? i dunno, but I'm trying to find out.
