Red Mallee Burl natural edge bowl
3 3/8" dia. x 3 1/2" tall x 3/16" wall
Finish: 5 coats of Tung Oil Finish, wet sanded to 1500, buffed with Zam.
This was the piece I started months ago for the 2010 calendar. I just got around to finishing this week after having a bit of a break on the leatherworking orders.
Frank - it was an unusual cut which is why I bought it and 3 more like it when I saw them 4 years ago. The vendor had a brain fart (his words not mine) and when cutting blanks out of a stack of burls grabbed the wrong one and started blocking it into cubes and such. 1/2 the burl was cut up before he realized what wood he was cutting so he finished it off and sold them. Compared to what RM usually goes for, I got them for a steal due to the odd shapes.
Looking good there, Chris. Love the calabash shape you gave this burl. Beautiful wood and work. How does it feel to get back in front of spinning wood? Good I would imagine. 8^)
Thanks Rev. Funny thing is I've been at the lathe quite a bit in the last few months but the burnishers I've been making are all the same - production style - work so I felt like spinning something different. The old drive still isn't quite there but it was fun.
