Was given this piece of pecan by a good friend who also turns. From the outside it was completely normal. It was very punky and had to be stabilized with CA in order to finish. Sanding sealed and 3 coats of Satin Deft Lacquer.
Before I read your description I was thinking that this was a rough piece of wood to turn. Looks like you did a good job of keeping it together. On the next piece like this you might try making a little bit of a flat rim. That way you won't end up with that sharp edge that tens to flake away on you. Keep an eye on your curve so that you don't have flat areas on the lower portion of the bowl as well. May just be an optical illusion that I'm seeing though. All in all I think you did a great job with this piece of wood. I'm sure it worked on your nerves a bit. Lovely. 8^)
