Anyone have any experience turning Pistachio wood?  No, It's not green! Grin  I picked up a couple of logs of it today.  The trees were cut standing dead last spring.  Also got some Pecan logs that were also cut dry over the last year.

Even standing dead, the wood could be green.  If it is indeed dry, without splits, you've truely got something there.  I had some that split so badly before I got to it that I nearly didn't get to do anything with it.  And, I mean anything.  Think I got a few pens out of it.

As I remember, it turned nicely though.   8)

I guess I will try a piece tomorrow and see.  If it's nice, I'll go get more while he has it.

Sounds like that's what's been said on two boards now.  Simply, go for it, dude.   8)

I got some off Ebay and it was real nice.  Still have a piece unturned had it a couple years now.  It turned nicely and did not crack or split but did warp some, not much.  Lovely wood, lots of figure and plenty of character, maybe oneday I'll post a pic of it.

I have turned pistachio from several different lots out of California orchards. It was a delight! Cut like buttah, beautiful grain. I've also turned both seasoned and green wood, and both are a delight. The green wood will give you purple-to-black hands, much like walnut. If your supply does turn out to be greener than you think, the wood does like to move while it's drying (particularly if your wood is from irrigated trees with large growth rings), so if you turn to a roughed-out stage leave yourself enough wood to correct the warping after the pieces have dried.

One last thing. Rather than loose pieces with cracks, I've instead filled the cracks with turquoise. This is a spectacular combination!

This is DRY.  Beleive me.  It had been in an irrigated grove, and they turned the water off 3 or 4 years ago.  It was harder than the kiln dried Oak I had a scrap of when I was first playing with the lathe.  I got a natural edge bowl our of it, but I don't know what I am going to do with the rest.  The bark was so solid that it survived a few sandpaper catches.

I turned some Ornamental Pistachio some months ago and it was a nice lime green which turned to a bronze color as it dried.  Very hard wood but turned out very nice.

This wasn't Ornamental Pistachio, it came from a Pistachio grove that was taken out of production because it took too much water out here in AZ.  It was already a light brown when I split it.  It finished out a medium brown.  you can see the natural edge bowl I turned from it in the gallery.
