Ficcus wood?
Nov 11th, 2005 at 12:55pm

Is Ficcus wood any good for turning?  I just got offered the trunk of a small Ficcus that was still alive when it was cut down earlier this week.  It was growing too close to the house.

Never heard of anyone turning it.  I would imagine that it is pretty plain.  But, who knows.  Give it a "spin" and see what happens.  Then you can report on what you find out.   8)

I got a reply on WC from a local turner, Sean Troy, that it turns like butter, sands Ok, Dyes well.  So I will get the other 6 feet of it.  I was given a piece about 4" dia by 12" long, and told that here was an additional 6 feet if I wanted it.  I told him to bring it to class Monday.

Looks like I following you across two boards.  I did ask on WC if it was plain or not. Don't know what has been said about that idea yet.   8)

Near as I can tell it is plain straight grain.

Hello,

I scored some pieces of ficus a couple months ago alongside the street.

Fun turning green ficus. The reference to turns like butter is accurate. Dyes and stains very easily, even if by accident. Shocked I turned one piece and have a couple more buried in the spalting pile as an experiment.

Light colored and plain grained, but easy to work with, sands and finishes okay.
