money question
Jul 13th, 2010 at 6:33pm

Business is starting to pick up again and way better then before, Nancy has expanded a related area and is no longer able to spend the time with the numbers ect.  So, I have been kinda handling the some of the funds and have them so screwed up I don't have a clue what is going on.....
So, here's my question.... is there a good book keeping program out there or is a person better off spending the money on someone to do it for you?

I use Peach Tree Complete Accounting and email the files to my CPA.

Some like QuickBooks.

(Should we move this to Marketing?)

Yep.

PeachTree Complete and QuickBooks are both good accounting programs for the non accountant.  From my prior experience, QB is a little easier to setup, but not much.  I believe both have free downloads available to play with.  See which you like and then look at price.  PT frequently has big rebates available.

Avoid MicroSoft Office Accounting!  It is hellish to setup and not compatable with anyone else and it has been discontinued. (I have seen it cheap)

QB is one of the most widely accepted and used programs on the market.  If you know what you're doing, however, Excell is pretty powerful and easy to use.  It doesn't write your checks like QB does though.  I wouldn't pay someone else to do books for me though.  Too easy to do yourself with just a little education on the subject.

I use quickbooks for my business and it does a good job for a small business.  I know people who use peachtree and it is also very good and probably a better (more powerful) program than quickbooks but you pay more for it.  Quickbooks is very easy to learn but get the right one.  One is for retail, one is for contractors and I think they have one other but not sure what it is.

They both start at $100 for a very basic version.  PT goes to $400 for their advanced version.  QB has versions up to $1200.  You don't want either basic version.

Well, lets see... I can do abstract math and can't balance a check book... So come on pro's.... what do I get?
Or how about if I have $500 to spend what do I get?
I want to be able to keep track of the business money in such a way that an accountant does not book a bahamas vacation when he sees my record keeping.

Either PT Pro for $200 or PT Complete for $300.

OR

Either QB Pro for $200 or QB Premier for $400.

Any of these will do the job.  I think I would lean towards the PT Complete, over the QB.  If you go to Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register they have an offer for a downloadable free trial and $100 off the Complete.  Makes it even better.

Brad,

Any of the versions Jim said will work.  You talk of an accountant so ask him/her which one they prefer you use.  After all they will be the one at tax time who has to accept the file and use it.

Dale

PS.  Learn something new everyday.  PT was always higher priced when I was looking.  I am glad to see that they came to there senses and got competitive.  From what I hear it is a good product.  Having said that QB Pro and now Premier have served me well.

I got my last copy of PT Complete 3 years ago for $45 after rebate.  I have owned and used both and preferred the PT over the GB.  There used to be a "Dummy's" book for the PT.  Might help.

Hope you didn't go out and buy anything yet.  I just noticed that Staples is offering the Peachtree Pro for free after $165 rebate.  It will cost you the sales tax on $165.  It is good through Saturday.
