A NEW Challenge & Trade
Jul 2nd, 2011 at 1:17am

A NEW Challenge & Trade!  We’ve done bowls, goblets, ornaments, wall hangings, pens, candlesticks, tops, boxes, cube, square round, twisted, enhanced, inside/out, and even game calls.

For those of you who are new to our C&T's,  You have been Challenged to create a piece to the best of your abilities that meet the specifications given, & once completed, you will Trade it to another participant either in a Round Robin, where A sends to B, B sends to C, C sends to D...  or you have a Partner to send your piece, and your partner will send you their piece.  Trade assignments are given after pieces are completed and all photos posted.  If you haven’t posted a picture of your completed piece by the picture deadline, you will not be eligible for a trade.

This C&T will be a Round Robin style trade.  Everyone who participates will be assigned another member to receive their bowl.  Sign up here if you are interested in giving it a try.  Everyone needs to post here when they ship, and again when they receive their trade.  Your mailing address must also be sent to me by PM by the picture deadline!  Also, when you sign up, indicate if you are willing to ship overseas if we have participants across the pond.  Or if we have enough participants there, we can run a separate group there.

The new challenge is to make an elongated natural edge bowl from a small log or branch.  Call it angel wing, or winged bowl, or banana bowl, or tray, or .... whatever.  Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register will give you an idea of what we are talking about.  These are turned from a skinny half or whole log in side grain orientation.

WARNING!
Keep your fingers behind the tool rest.  You will be mostly cutting air.  Advance tools very slowly or you will experience IFO’s. (Identified Flying Objects)

OK!  Now who is going to sign up to try this?   Are you in?  It doesn’t matter if you are a seasoned turner or a relative newbie.  All we ask is that you make a serious effort to do your best.  We know it is summer, so we are giving you plenty of time to do it.

The C&T gallery will open late on Friday, August 5 and your picture must be posted by midnight EDT Sunday, August 7.  Participants will be assigned a trade using random.org, and the assignments will be posted Monday, August 8.  All packages must be postmarked by Saturday August 13.

Good Luck!

Does it say "Secret" or "Mystery"?  Nope, not this time.

I'm in.  All I have to do is find a suitable piece of wood.  May have just the ticket.
Should be a lot of fun.

Got to check the woodpile for what I have in mind, but I think I'll give it a go.

Oh man, really??!!??   Sad  I was looking forward to this when I found out what C&T meant, but I'm pretty sure this is beyond my capability at this point.  We'll see, I guess that's the "challenge" part of C&T, right?

You got it Erika.  Give it a try, but remember the warnings.  Once you have it mostly balanced, they actually turn better at higher speeds.  There is less "air" time.  It just seems more solid.

If you don't try, you won't succeed.

Yes.  The only problem is having people willing to pay the extra postage for Canadian or overseas postage.  Go ahead and try, and we will work on having it covered.

DUDE!  I just re-read the parameters.  I've turned two pieces already and I don't think that either fits.  Maybe the first one.  I'll have to chew on it a while.  However, I'm on a role turning the past few days.  I may knock it out tomorrow.  LOML and son are going to TN Monday for the week.  I should be able to spend a good bit of evening time in the shop next week as well.  Who knows what I might get turned.

Parameters, hmmm....  Elongated...  Natural edge...  Half or full log...  Side grain...  Bowl or tray...

What doesn't fit?  Is it too specific?  Remember, that was just one example.  Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register would be another.

I know.  Either would have been accepted.  But they just don't fit.  One was a wing bowl like Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register.  The second one was more of a closed form bowl, think calabash.  Like I said, I'm on a turning role right now.  Just an excuse to get back in the shop and TURN.

I'm surprised that we haven't had more people sign up for this.  Do we really have that few who are interested in even trying?
