On my way down the drive to the post office to mail my box, the mail lady met me at the gate with a box.   Thanks to Don I have some nice pieces of spalted silver maple, red cedar, mulberry and osage orange.   Can't wait to start in on them!

The clerk at the post office said if I had shipped them in a non-flat rate box it would have been $55 & change.   She said I didn't even have to wait for Black Friday to get such a deal.

Yesterday I was in the middle of baking German brotchen and soft pretzels, when the Mail truck pulled into the driveway. She delivered two flat rate boxes from Steve Doerr and David Seaba. I was running behind and still have to make my Marzipan, so I placed the boxes in my shop for the time being.

Today feeling bloated after our dinner I decided to take a walk and went to the shop to see what I had waiting for me. I felt like a kid in the candy store looking at all the new wood I had to play with.

One piece that stood out for me was a large piece of dark oak(humorously labeled tornado oak) from Steve. I immediately decided this would be a box for my mother. She had sold her home and moved away from Joplin in 2006. She lived on Moffet Street in the Bell Starr house, the same house that was the first bank in Joplin in 1906. When the tornado hit Joplin in 2010, she lost 5 good friends. I know she went to Joplin a week after the tornado to look for her firends and help lay those she lost to rest. I think knowing this piece of wood came from Joplin that it would have sentimental meaning to her. Thank you Steve.

David I was thoroughly amazed as to how many species you could fit in a box. I hit the piece of birds eye maple with a card scrapper and the clean design is perfect for a pen set I had planned to make just waiting for the perfect piece of wood for it.

All I know is I am looking forward to the next wood trade.

Don,
What a coincidence that your mom is from Joplin.  I'm sure she will really appreciate you turning a box from the "tornado" oak that I sent you.  I have done lots of pens bowls and some HF from that oak and it has been very popular here.  It has made some great keepsakes for many people here in town.  For many of the people it is their tie to pre-tornado Joplin.
Happy Turning,
Steve

Got my package from Steve Doerr, and was pleasantly surprised by the treasures within! Awesome stuff Steve, thank you so much. I especially like the tornado oak and the sycamore. Cant wait to dig in. This will also be my first time turning osage orange, I've been wondering what that's like.  smiley=dankk2.gif smiley=beer.gif smiley=thumbsup.gif

Such a busy week I forgot to thank Charlie Sandall for the nice box of exotic wood. I want to turn it all but also enjoy looking at them on my shelf.

Thank You Charlie

Just wanted to thank Buck for his box. Been so busy I finally opened it. Now the challenge is what do I make? That maple bowl blank is calling for me to turn it. Gotta wait until my semester is over. 2 more weeks bang head
