6500 Member Wood Trade
Feb 6th, 2014 at 12:48am

MAY I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE!

You asked for it, you got it.  Again!

Announcing a new wood trade to celebrate reaching 6500 members.  We have gained 500 new members since July 16th!

Ladies and gentlemen, YOU are the reason Woodturners Resource exists.  Since we have reached this incredible count we want to celebrate by having another wood trade.

This trade is open to all members, even new ones.

Here is how it works:
Go to the post office and obtain a flat rate box.  (They are free, stock up.)  Unfortunately, the Flat Rate Boxes are only good within the US, so this trade will be restricted to members inside the borders of the USA.  (So sorry to have to do this    Cry )
Post in this thread and Send me a PM with your mailing address and list any woods you are allergic to in the PM.  To keep things straight, use the subject,
6500 Trade
.

You must designate whether you want to trade one MEDIUM or LARGE flat rate box, one of each or 2 of either! I will be keeping 2 lists, one for Medium, and another for Large.
Cut some of your local wood to shape and size so that it will fill that box. Be sure to
LABEL
what wood it is!

Just after the deadline I will send a PM with the name and address of the person you will send your box to.  Get your box in the mail and then sit back and wait for a similar box to arrive at your house.

Names will be put into random.org to assign who you will send wood to.  Once those names are announced, you may contact your partner via PM to see what their preferences are and then fill their desires, or simply surprise your recipient.  Since this is a Round Robin trade, no one knows who is sending to them unless you contact them.  Personally, I prefer surprises and suggest having your box(es) filled long before the names are drawn.

So, get your names and addresses to me via PM, fill those boxes, and let the trades begin.

Deadline to have names and addresses in:      Tuesday, 3/4/14, 8am PST
Recipients to be announced sometime:      Wednesday, 3/5/14
Wood in the mail no later than:                     Saturday, 3/15/14

If you go to the Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register website, print a label and pay on line, you can save $1.05 medium or $1.55 large on the postage and have your carrier pick it up at your house.

IMPORTANT!!  PLEASE READ!!  There are lots of creepy crawlies that have infested much of our wood here in the USA.  Because of that fact, borders have tightened on raw wood.  Even within the country I understand that the PO is watching things a bit more closely.  Besides we don't want to be responsible for the spread of insects that can devastate our supply of raw material.  I would ask that everyone PLEASE remove all bark from your wood. Do NOT send any Walnut or Ash. Both woods are under various quarantines.  Do NOT ship any wood that has obvious borers, or other bugs, present.

I would further suggest that you fully tape all the seams and corners of the box so that any critters that do make it through your diligent inspection will be contained until it arrives at its destination.  If you used a sealer on the end grain, place the wood inside a plastic bag in the box.

Let's do some trading!

If we have several members in Canada that are interested, we can have a separate Canadian Round Robin.

ONE MORE THING!
As everyone is well aware, Mother Nature has given many, if not all, of the members a very strange winter indeed. The wide range of temperatures and humidity in particular may cause some species of wood to react badly by cracking or splitting.
If possible it would be a good idea to seal the wood you are sending.
Anchor-seal, wax, paint or even plastic wrap would help, you don't want your trade partner to receive cracked wood.

Is there any way for me to buy into this? Since I am not setup yet (no bandsaw) to cut up wood and limited access to green wood.

Please do not take this as being selfish.  The last thing that I wish to do is "take away" from somebody else.

My question is, can you enter this trade more than once....meaning, if I am willing to send in (as an example) 2 small pieces of wood and 2 large pieces of wood, should I expect to get 4 pieces of wood from other people involved in the trade?
It would be my thought (might be wrong) that the more wood sent in, the better the opportunity to accommodate more people.

Regardless of the answer to this post, count me in for one large piece.

Jim, thank you for taking the time to put this together.

Dick the way the trade works is you put in for either a large USPS flat rate box or a medium. Then jim will send you info on who to send the box to and any allergies they may have or what they may be looking for., when the sign up is closed. Another member will get your name that coralates with what your tradeing. Please send jim a pm with your info as requested in the first post.

Also if you wanted to do more then 1 box thats ok too. Jim will work out who your sending to.

Generally we have limited the trade to 2 boxes.  Either one of each, or 2 small or 2 large flat rate boxes.  Make sure the box is full and each piece is labeled as to type of wood.  I have received boxes of Dunno wood.

Elijah

The only way for you to buy into this would be to buy wood to trade, which really doesn't make sense.

Just keep an eye out, there will be other trades.
