C&T - Cube
Jun 19th, 2014 at 12:32pm

MAY I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE!

I have had several requests, so it is time for us to have a C&T.

Here is how it works:
Post in this thread if you want to participate, or you can wait until after you have completed your piece.
Turn your piece and post again that you have completed it.
Take a picture of it, but don’t post in the gallery until the designated time.
Get it boxed so it is ready to mail.
Names will be put into random.com to assign with whom you will trade your piece.
This is a partner trade, so after the deadline I will post the pairings in this thread.
PM your mailing address to your trade partner.
Get your package into the mail by the mailing deadline and then sit back and wait for one to arrive at your house.

This one is a bit of a challenge.  We’ll go back and revisit another oldie/goldie, the Cube Challenge.  Here's the  deal.  You start with a cube.  It doesn't have to be one piece of wood, it can be a glue up.  For this challenge we'll say no larger than 5" x 5" x 5".  Once the cube is established your task is to turn a piece to trade that will be a challenge to you but will also leave some part of the cube so that it will be known that you used a cube to start with.  Feel free to look back in the Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register of the pieces that were turned for the last cube challenge.  If you participated, do not do the same thing you did last time.  Even though we will all start with a 3" to 5" cube, your final size will vary depending on how large your cube is and your design.  However, try to keep as much of the size as possible.  I expect to see edges, corners, points, etc. as evidence of the original cube being used.

A couple of  Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register also fit the specs.

This C&T is open to all members, even new ones.

Schedule:  You can begin to sign up on this thread anytime and continue to sign up until the dead-line.
C&T Gallery will open:                                  Wednesday, 7/16/14
Deadline to have photos in the Gallery:           Sunday, 7/20/14, 9am PDT
Partners to be announced:                           Sunday, 7/20/14
Piece in the mail no later than:                      Saturday, 7/26/14

So, get your name on the list and get to turning.  Enjoy the challenge and do your best, someone will be adding it to their Rogue's Gallery.  You should learn something, or do something, new in the process.  That is the challenge.  I look forward not only to see who is joining me in this challenge, but what everyone comes up with.  There are always some that will surprise us with their imagination and interpretation of the "rules."  Have fun and let the games begin.

For those of you who are new to our C&T's, it is a Challenge to create a piece, to the best of your abilities, that meets the specifications given, & once completed, you will Trade it to another participant either in a Round Robin, where A sends to B, B sends to C, C sends to D...  or you have a Partner to send your piece, and your partner will send you their piece.  Trade assignments are given after pieces are completed and all photos posted.  If you haven’t posted a picture of your completed piece by the deadline, you will not be eligible for a trade.

The timing allows about 4 weeks to give people time to learn and practice if need be.      You can post in this thread as soon as your piece is done, but don't post any pictures until the challenge gallery opens.  Remember, No Photo, No Trade. Pictures need to be clear and less than 75KB to post in the gallery.  If you haven’t already registered in the gallery, do so using the same User Name as in the forum.  It uses different software, so it is necessary to register and sign in separately.

This trade will be a Partner trade.  I will use Random.org to select the trades on Sunday, July 20.  I will then post the pairings in this thread, and you need to PM your address to your partner. Packages should be postmarked by Saturday, July 26.

OK!  Now who is going to sign up to try this?   Are you in?  It doesn’t matter if you are a seasoned turner or a relative newbie.  All we ask is that you make a serious effort to do your best.  If you are in, indicate whether you are willing to spend the little extra to ship outside the country if any of our Canadian or International members participate.

Everybody!  Lets Turn and Trade!!

5" cube is the maximum size, it can be smaller.

Come on everyone let's get some more people in this.
There are over 6700 members, lets try to get more than a half dozen to join in.

Dennis, yes, you start with a cube and make something from it, leaving at least some corners or edges that show that it was originally a cube.

I must have got lucky, or it was omen, the cube started out perfect 3.125 x 3.125 x 3.125 after a few minutes on the oscillating belt sander.
what happened after I mounted it on the lathe, well lets just say design opportunities abound, Cheesy  Sometimes the wood just has a way of letting one know what doesn't belong. I definitely learned some new things.

While I'm not the cube police, I think you should start with a proper cube, without the extra for the foot.(that may be the challenge part for you)
If we all start with something other than a true cube, the we lose an element of the challenge.

I am having some problems with mine.  I will try my best to get it together and get it done but don't be surprised if I have to bow out at the last minute.  What I envisioned is harder to do than I expected.

Remember, the gallery will open for pictures tomorrow, and all pictures have to posted by Sunday morning before I login.  Also be sure to post here that you are in the C&T and specify whether or not you are willing to pay the slightly higher international shipping to Canada.

I just need to put the final finish on mine.

I don't have a list yet, as not everyone has said whether they have finished.

The Gallery is open.  Be sure to post under "2014 Cube C&T."  If you haven't already signed up in the gallery, you will need to do it separately from the forum since it uses different software.  Be sure to sign up using the SAME NAME!  That way we know who you are.

This is what I started with and how I started.  Obviously, it still needs another coat of WOP and polishing. Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

I don't know about the wizardry aspect, but there is really no end to what you can hold. I have made several different sets, each for a specific application.
BTW, these are mini cole jaws.

Mine is posted.  The grain was crazy to work with.  Several didn't survive.

There are only 4 entries.  Who else is waiting for the last minute.

We gave you a month, but I've still received several requests for more time.

Obviously at this point I am OUT, I shed blood sweat and no tears but the frustration level became extremely high.

All I can say is I have large bucket full of mahogany splinters and shavings and 5 chunks of wood that just did not turn out ... I don't know if it is the wood, my lack of experience with this wood or a combination of both.

I think my best lesson for something like this would be K.I.S.S.

All of you that completed and posted in the gallery, VERY well done and I think your pieces are awesome.

Someday I hope to be able post along side your turnings.

Sorry I could not finish

Dennis, fear not, there will be another C&T with a different theme. With these C&T's, the challenge part is different for everyone, and not necessarily the turning portion. For myself the challenge part was to attempt to "lighten up" the clunky look of a cube. I had a feeling many would opt for the triangular style, so I wanted to go a different direction With my entry, I now have many ideas swimming around my head about inserts, lamination's and so on. That's one of the big pay-offs for me, (what it sparks) as well as seeing what the others come up with.
I am curious what you were trying to create that caused the mishaps for you if you don't mind describing it, maybe we can help.

I wish we had had more people participating, but we have some great pieces being traded.  My "Rogue's Gallery" is still growing.

The pairings were done using Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register.  The partners are:

Bob Hamilton  <>  Ed Weber
Bert Delisle  <>  Tony Rozendaal
Tim Thompson  <>  Jim Quarles

Send a PM to your partner with your mailing address.  Try to get them in the mail by Saturday.  If this is your first time sending a finished piece, do NOT start off with bubble wrap.  First wrap it in paper towel or cloth.  Bubble wrap WILL stick to the finish.

Ed & Tony, Since you are shipping to Canada, you will need to go to the PO and fill in a Form CN 22.  I understand that this can be done online when you pay for your postage online, but I have not done any that way to explain the process.  If you try it online, the boxes will need the same information as the paper form.

Check the box for Gift
Description (1) = Wooden Craft
Qty (2) = 1
Weight (3) = estimate of package weight or leave blank until you get to the PO
Value (4) = 00.
HS Tariff (5) = blank
Exemption (7) = Check first box NOEEI 30.37(a)
Print your name and address and then Recipient’s.
Sign and date (8)

Most contract stations (in gift shops etc) will not accept or even have Form CN 22, so you will need to go to a regular PO.

Thank you all for participating.

OK,  The Post Office is closed for the day.  Did everyone get their package shipped?

We know that 4 have shipped and 2 of them have already been received.

A Canadian mouse showed up here today. It's taken up residence on my desk here at home.

Thanks, Bert.

Rolly polly hollow form was in the mail box when I got home, awesome piece of work. And a great story too. Thanks so much Tony.

I got the cube from Ed Weber today, although we hadn't checked the mail since last week so it could have been sitting in the post office for a while.  Very nice job, Ed!

Thanks
Bob

Still waiting on mine.  The USPS returned it because they tried to deliver it in a different zip code.

Tim's arrived today, none the worst for having traveled 3 times between Tennessee and Arizona.  Thanks Tim.  Good job.  It will rest with the other pieces in my "Rogue's Gallery" from earlier C&T's.
