Challenge & Trade or Wood Trade
Jun 4th, 2015 at 7:51pm

I want to find out if there is enough interest before I go about setting up either one.  The last 2 C&T's had only a few members participate.

For those of you who are new to our C&T's, it is a Challenge to create a piece, to the best of your abilities, that meets the specifications given, & once completed, you will Trade it to another participant either in a Round Robin Trade, where A sends to B, B sends to C, C sends to D...  or you have a Partner Trade to send your piece, and your partner will send you their piece.  Trade assignments are given after pieces are completed and all photos posted.  If you haven’t posted a picture of your completed piece by the deadline, you will not be eligible for a trade.

A Wood Trade is similar except you are trading a USPS flat rate box of local wood with someone.

Jim, I voted for the C&T.  I've participated in several of the wood swaps and think it would be neat to get a turning from another turner.

Jim should we promote this poll in the "turning talk" and "Other turning topics" sections?

Guy, if you want to get more members involved in a wood trade or a C&T, go right ahead and promote it, that's what it's about, member participation.
It may be that there aren't enough members able to spare the time for this type of thing right now, but you never know unless you ask.  Smiley

I participated in the last wood trade and loved it, so I vote for a trade.
The parameters of a C&T would determine my interest level as I have limited tools and skills .
Thanks, Steve

I've found that over the years the C&T's have given me an opportunity to turn items that I may not have thought of, or may not have ever tried. Your skill level will improve when trying different things.
Look at the C&T's in the gallery and see what you think.
Jim didn't mention the parameters of the challenge, so you might want to suggest something.

How about a hollow form with some type of inlay. Be it powder metal or stone Smiley or some type of a dye, or airbrush finish. Thoughts? This would be good for beginer to advanced.

I voted "both" but would be more interested in a C & T than a wood trade.

Since I'm not employed at the moment, I voted C&T. Got some new blocks to make something from. Do not have the fancy tools to make a hollow form, BUT would like to see the parameters before I un-commit. Glenn J.

this is the best reason to do a C&T, have you do something outside your normal area.

There is a reason we call it a "Challenge".  We want to challenge you to expand your abilities.

For example, I never really had any desire to make a Christmas ornament. after a C&T a few years ago, I seem to be making them all the time.

I have not participated in a C&T event but here are my suggestions for potential participants guidelines:

1)      Hollow form, bowl, plate(s) or platter made of two or more species of wood

2)      Bowl or platter with a Unique Surface Treatment (burning, airbrush, carving, texture, inlay, sandblast, etc.)

3)      Multiple turnings assembled into a single themed piece (still being able to ship in a flat rate box) – may require some assembly required upon receipt???

4)      Incorporate Glass into a turning (inexpensive commercial glass, sea glass, or glass beads, or marbles, or make your own etc.) as an accent / highlight or center of interest

5)      Multi-axis turning

6)      Daily use items

or a combo of two or more of these ...

Any feedback on past events, favorites or interest in the above or votes for additions to the list??

A lot of good suggestions Tom, thanks

Keep in mind that not everyone has hollowing tools or other specialty tools.
We want to be able to have as many people participate as possible.

Keep the suggestions coming and get others interested

Ed - I agree 100% that is why I tried to make each area broad enough to allow many abilities / tools and materials.

and Ed, THANK YOU for all you do to put this together / keep it going and moderate it to remain on subject.  Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I voted for C&T, past participation gave me inspiration to try something I had not done yet. Great confidence builder and fun.

With 15 people wanting a C&T, it looks like that is what we will do.  Any suggestions before I go in the back of my shop and brew up some ideas?

How about turning something that is not wood?

Plywood, MDF, OSB, Corian, alabaster, bondo, epoxy, brass, aluminum, etc, etc.....

Or any combination thereof.
