Challenge and Trade
Feb 28th, 2017 at 6:21pm

Here is something we used to do a while back.  I'd like to try and bring it back again.
It's called a challenge and trade or C & T for short.
If you’ve participated before you can skip down to the challenge guidelines..
If your new to C & T’s, here’s how they work.
Participants will turn a challenge piece within specifications.  After completion, post a picture of your creation in the "Turning Talk" section and in the Gallery labeled  "C&T Spring 2017".  The deadline for entries will be on April 1st.  The names of all the participants will be thrown into an electronic hat and randomized. We will then post the pairings in this thread. Once you know your trade partner, you will then be responsible for sending a PM for his or her address. Then simply ship the package and wait to receive your trade.  This is a “round-robin” type of trade, not a direct exchange.

This is NOT a competition !  It is....
1. To expand your skills
2. To develop friendships across the WR community.
All members are encouraged to participate.  NO MATTER your skill level.
   Lets have some fun.
...............................................................................
Guidelines

The Challenge....
Turn a lidded box.
                          1 ½”  to 4” in diameter (38mm – 100mm)
                          2” to 4” tall (50mm – 100mm)
                          Design is your choice
                          Wood is your choice
                          Finish is your choice
                          Glue ups are OK

Challenge starts March 1st.  Ends April !st.
Participants must have a photo of their project posted by the deadline to be included in the trade.
Please post here if you intend to participate.
We do have some members outside the U.S., Please indicate whether you’re willing to ship abroad.
Hopefully we can get a dozen or more trades going.

I participated in some of these years ago.  They were a lot of fun.  I ended up trading a pen with a young girl in Australia, IIRC.  I would love to be part of this challenge but March is very busy month and I have no idea how I would make time to get on the lathe and do good job.  Thus, I will bow out of this C & T but I will certainly keep and eye out for future C & T's.

Guy, just to clarify - OK to assume that the 4in height is for the lidded box itself without a finial, but if desired, a finial could be added atop the 4" height?

It's ready David.  Register and, or log in.  Page down a short way and you'll see,  WR Member Galleries then below that WR Challenges.  directly below that you'll see "C&T Spring 2017"
Open that title, then up to the right you'll see "Upload Photos".
There you go.

I posted a couple pictures of my finished box over in the gallery.

Thanks for hosting this Guy - it was a challenge (based on the smallness), and still fun - but reminded me why I gravitate toward larger pieces.  I may have overcomplicated as well by leaving a natural edge, but that was part of the challenge!  I confess to a minor violation of the size limit, as my piece is about 4.5 inches tall due to the natural edge (not counting the finial).

Whew finally got one finished. My challenge was to make a round fitted lid that only fits perfectly in one location on round box. Seen something similar done last year at a club demo, wasn't motivated to try it myself till this C&T. Not as easy to make as a conventional lidded box, some preplanning is definitely in order. Thankfully pieces are small, so failures disappear in the shaving pile quickly.  Cheesy

Great submissions,
A caution for wood that has bark on it and intention to ship across an international border. That may be a problem at the customs desk. I would hate to see a work piece relegated to the border crossing sin bin.

Bert, et. al,
Is the customs/bark thing a problem when sending via postal service person-to-person?  Do I need to withdraw my ability to ship outside the US?

I'm not sure Bill, it is probably a crap shoot with the scanning systems being used in the transportation and postal systems these days, especially with international.
I have heard that even inter-state transportation of some species of raw wood products can be at issue and some states are more restrictive than others. I just wanted to raise awareness to something I ran into in the past and to help limit future disappointments.

Ok, thanks Bert.  I recently shipped a couple items, one with bark edge, from California to Missouri without incident, but I don't think there would have been any customs involvement.  I'd rather not withdrawn my intent to ship outside the US.

I think the size of the package, and your declaration document stating finished craft item as a gift, will not raise any red flags. It should scan and not indicate any metals and be consistent density. The dog should not set upon it either unless you include some samples from legal states.

Although California is a "legal state", the only "samples" I would include might be a few pen blanks...   Cool

OK here we go just a few more days to get in on the C&T.
Most who have originally signed on have posted their work and it all looks great.

It's not to late to get in on this.
April first I'll get the names in the mixer.

C&T challenge entry

I wanted to add a little background and history behind my entry. The material came from a factory located in Fredericton NB. The maple was used for shoe Lasts, I was fortunate enough to find a stash of these and each one holds a suprise. I cannot guess at the age but I know the pieces I have are over 45 yrs since they were in the plant. This is the factory: Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register  This is the copy lathe used: Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register  Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register  Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register The last image shows an example of the material I start with, the walnut came from an organ marked 1897.

Hey Dave, how are you doing? I live in Miramichi, I was passing through Quispam last week, my older brother used to live there. It's nice to see another New Brunswicker on here.

Here's my box.  I chose a simple design due to the spalting.
It's a birch blank brought to me from a neighbor.

Here is my entry.
Cherry with a Malichite inlay.

The lid is looser than I would like, but I have been having issues with fitments lately. Just means I need more time at the lathe Wink

I have had this posted in the gallery for a week or so, but I see most of the others are posted in this thread as well.

This box is turned from mountain ash (rowan) that I cut down in my back yard a few years ago. It had dried out and spalted and is very soft. The lid has an insert made from osage orange, which in turn has a few decorations cut with the use of the Joyner Jig.

Several coats of wipe on polyurethane and a beall buff to finish the piece.

Something interesting that happened when I was making the box is that I had the lid mounted on a jam chuck to make the recess for the insert. The lid was a nice fit on the jam chuck, I had popped it on and off once and it was just about a perfect fit - tight enough to turn the lid but popped off easily.  After I glued (Titebond 2) the insert into the recess, I  didn't think I would ever get the lid off the jam chuck.  Apparently the fumes or moisture from the glue had caused the wood to swell just a little bit.

When you send your package, post here that you have done so.
DO NOT indicate who you sent to.
When your trade arrives, post here again that you received it and from who, whom???

David your package arrived today.  Thumbs Up  I'll be taking it to my turning club to show off tomorrow.
It's a beauty.  Thanks for the "shoe last" blank and the history of Hartt Shoe and Boot.  I'm glad they saved the front of the original building.
I'm not sure what to do with the blank.  Should I save it near the box you made for me?  It's all part of the story. or, Should I create something and continue the story?  This is hard.  Hmmm  Thank you very much.

A medium flat rate box was at my front door this evening. Way too heavy to contain a 4" lidded box. What a surprise to find two big chunks of wood, walnut and cherry.

Wrapped up to the side was also that magnificent spalted mountain ash box pictured in Tony Rozendaal's post above. Thanks Tony, outstanding workmanship on that little box.

What is the second word written on the block of Cherry ? Did these two blocks of wood come from your property also ?

Thanks for the kind words.  I think the word on the cherry is "Graves" which is the name of the folks where I cut the cherry, near Waukesha, WI. The walnut comes from a friend near Sullivan, WI.
