Pyrography Texturing
Nov 14th, 2018 at 10:23am

At some point I want to have a go at texturing a project with a Pyrography machine. The pattern I want to try first uses a wire coil. You can of course buy these ready made but making them yourself is obviously cheaper. Making the fine wire ones is not too tricky, you can do this by hand on a suitable size drill bit but it’s not so easy with thicker wire so I’ve just bought one of these and it works very well. It’s much quicker, easier and neater than doing it by hand. The tool only cost a few pounds.

Interesting tool.

In the past I would coil nichrome wire around a bolt.

I’ve got both sizes now, the 2mm and the 2.5mm and they work great for such an inexpensive little gizmo. The thickest wire I’ve tried is .9mm or 20swg and I don’t think you’d easily use anything any thicker.

I've been making my own coils for years and it does take a little practice to get them right, but these little devices are so cool they would produce a perfectly tight coil each time, much better than hand winding around a nail. I buy direct from a wire making company and one small spool of nichrome wire has lasted me for 6 or 7 years and it is still almost full. Thanks for the tip I will probably buy one.

Just watch the video link in post #1. The tools come with two screws, one is a spare so remove it and put it in a safe place.

I’ve used mine several times and it makes what was a bit of a minor chore into something fun!  Smiley

Maybe it would be nice if some of you guys/gals familiar with pyrography techniques could show a photo or two.
Why would I want to twist a wire around a shaft?
What patterns can I make with it?

I saw the tool and it reminded me of making resistors for electronics back in the eighties.

Here's a couple of  pieces from a class i took in October:

They were made with a flattened wire  as well as  grinding the wood.

These are definitely not  finished pieces, just pieces to practice on and try to understand how the process works.

Here's a link to the site of the teacher of the class:
