Boiled Linseed Oil on Reclaimed Redwood. Polish????
Nov 12th, 2019 at 1:43pm

Hey y'all.  I am using some old dry reclaimed redwood that I have put Boiled Linseed Oil and it looks awesome.  I want to add a polish on top of that and since I have not done this before I thought I would see what others would recommend.  I don't want high gloss, more for protection and a matte type look if possible.  Would I use a regular furniture polish?  Wax?

Thanks in advance!!!

We need more info to give you decent answer.  What is the object and where will it be used. BLO by itself is a rather mediocre finish and wax offers little protection but adds a shine.

Thanks Al.  These are for closet doors actually and we used the BLO because of the way it made the reclaimed redwood really look amazing.  I tested other finishes and BLO made the wood look deep and rich.  Now I realize that a durable final finish will be needed since the doors will be opened all day everyday...
Thanks again,
Jeff

Research thoroughly "furniture polish" before using.  I have no direct knowledge but I've seen numerous suggestions that some contain silicone.

In general, I would not expect a furniture polish to offer much more protection than wax, which wears off under regular use.  Suggestions I've seen in the past as protective finishes are urethanes, polyurethanes, varnishes, danish oils, and more.  Some are available in more than one sheen (gloss, semi, satin, flat, . . .).

I would use an oil based polyurethane. Mostly I do not like the water based stuff. JMHO
