Rectangular walnut bowl with natural edge
Jan 4th, 2020 at 3:04am

Today I show you the creation of a flat rectangular bowl with natural edge all out of walnut wood.

After the planing I glued the board with hot glue on a cone of the turner's lining. After that I started with the mold-turning of the outer shape. Then I glued the other side and turned the inside. As a finish I have sanded it up to grain 500, then treated it with turner oil.

I like your work, Roger, but this one - not so much.   Undecided

To my eye, there is not enough "dish" in the platter. I realize that you don't have much thickness to work with, though, so that limits what you can do.

Beautiful grain. I’m wondering why you made this on the lathe. Why not just carve it with the angle grinder?

Is there a way to avoid the deep grooves off the gouge? Could you get a better cut working from the Centre outwards without the tail stock in place? Smiley

Yeah, I agree. You could have done this with carving tools and scrapers and sanding.

No need to have something like that flying around with 4 pointy ends waiting for your fingers.
