Shortages
Aug 24th, 2020 at 12:12pm

During the time of Covid-19 we're all living in there have been supply shortages of many items. Now I don't want to get into all the reasons why but rather what.
I haven't had too much of an issue when I need to buy a tool or some wood but over the weekend I naively tried to buy some replacement filters for my respirator.
I've had to use my respirator more often due to the wildfire smoke, i won't go outside without it.
This is the one woodworking related item that I had difficulty finding.

Have any of you had any issues getting the necessary supplies for your work?

No troubles with my woodworking hobby related stuff that I can recall. Household and personal items are another story though.

Americans are much too accustomed to having anything they want on a shelf in a store. Back a few months ago at the height of the Covid 19 induced shortages I could not find peanut butter to buy and thought that was a major deal.

In my younger years I spent two years in southeast Asia where they did not even have a paper bag to put their market purchases in. They just took it in stride as the way it was and moved on.

Some things I was quite prepared for, other things I never considered. I guess I never thought there was a need to stock up on certain items.

For me, it is sheet stock sand paper and belts. Also, latex gloves.

Latex gloves and I had the same issue with respirator filters early into the pandemic.  I haven't looked for them lately.

Not turning related, but I need to repair a wheel for my granddaughter's mountain bike and I can't find a replacement. There is a bicycle and bicycle parts shortage nationwide.

Ok, here's an interesting one.

We are just now able to get full sheets of plexi from our framing distributors.

Seems the manufacturers were selling it all to companies who were making all of those plexi shields at cash registers and such.

We were low on the list of plexi consumers.

Also finally able to buy Scott paper towels at my local Shaw's.

Not turning related but I can't get a garage door opener.  I have to go through a certain company because of a homeowner warranty but I have been waiting almost two months. The last I heard the openers were on the way but they can't get the rail for the drive.

Okay, not turning related, unless you store finish in mason jars.
You can't find good quality (Mason, Ball, Kerr) lids for a reasonable price unless you buy a dozen boxes.

If you wanted an extra freezer, it's a two month minimum wait. I was able to repair mine by replacing the thermostat.
Lately I just caught wind or a pepperoni shortage  Shocked
and the list goes on and on

I've been purchasing my latex gloves at Harbor Freight for years because of the price and quality.    They were shifting their supply of gloves to medical facilities until recently, but the gloves are still in short supply in the stores.    I went on their website and was able to order there, but after I placed the order I received a notice saying that it would be "indefinite" amount of time before the order could be filled and wanted to know if I would wait.   YES, I'll wait, as there is little other choice.
