Hello from UK two...

Hello from Sid, another new UK member.
I am an ode git who has had no practical experience throughout my working life having taught photography amongst other things. I recently joined the Men in Sheds here in Port Erin on the Isle of Man and on my first day there was introduced to the delights of the lathe. I am eager to learn from all you experienced people here and look forward to sharing the pleasures of this delightful pastime, hobby, creative craft, etc...

Welcome Sid, enjoy the ride.
We all had a similar experience as you did in when we first discovered the lathe.
What do you envision turning on your old record lathe?

Hello Ed, thanks for your reply. So far, I have been really enjoying pen turning but I'm told that at 2000 rpm max the lathe could be better. I have made a couple of egg cups and next on the list are a few salt and pepper mills. I'm looking forward to attempting bigger things but still enjoy the small stuff too...

2000 RPM is plenty in my opinion.
One reason why pen turners like higher rpm's, is so they can apply a friction polish finish, for the actual turning of the wood, it is plenty.
Don't let the 2000 rpm limit dissuade you from trying anything, it's not that much of a concern.

Hi Sid.  Although my lathe will turn much faster than 2K I rarely go that high while turning.  While finishing yes but not necessary. Most of my bowls (plenty) were turned at less than 1000 RPM.  Welcome to the hobby it is something you will not or maybe will regret because once it gets you your are a  goner.

Ed, the amount of RPM on the lathe should not be a concern. What will matter most is the speed that you are comfortable turning whatever at. If it feels unsafe, slow down.
Welcome,
Glenn J.

Hi. I’m from Tucson Az. and just started to get more serious about turning. I have an old Rockwell lathe with external capacitor motor. I have been trying to find a reverse thread chuck or face plate to be able to turn larger pieces on the opposite side of shaft and can’t seem to find either. Was wondering if anyone had some insight
