When To Stop Sanding?
Nov 9th, 2022 at 7:40pm

Another wood turning article I read described sanding through I believe 600.  Years ago I was going to prove my finisher friend wrong, carefully handplaned a piece of cherry, then hand sanded one end with 600 and the other end with 220.  Then applied shellac via french polish.  I couldn't tell the difference.

And for those applying a film finish (Nitro cellulose, acrylic, poly, . . .) the label instructions often say do not sand beyond 220.  If wanting to sand beyond, make some adhesion tests on scrap wood is a good idea.

Speaking only for myself, I never had an adhesion problem with top coats. I frequently sand well beyond what is called for.

The biggest thing I've found is to sand fine enough to not have any sanding marks show. And they always show up after finish is applied and part taken out into the sun. Does sun shine cause scratches?

Yes, a chemical reaction occurs when the finish is exposed to sunlight triggering a change in the alignment in the floget string.  This is carefully splained in duh specksheet but can only be read when exposed to direct sunlight overnight.

When I started turning, someone told me turners sand beyond 220 because we aren't doing flatwork.  The grain helps "hide" scratches since flatwork is sanded with the grain.  Lathe has the wood going cross grain, side grain, every which way grain, you need to sand to finer grits to help "hide" and remove scratches from being visible.

If you do segmented turning, all the grain runs around the circumference again so just switch to segmenting then sanding is easy.

Of course you'll spend 5 times as much time cutting and gluing.   Grin Grin Grin
