About Urns
Jun 28th, 2024 at 9:00am

I came across this PDF article by Mara James, who is a funeral director by trade and a potter by hobby.

I  thought this would be quite relevant to us woodturners

Thanks for posting this.  It's a great article and I've saved it to my "Turning Stuff" folder.   Urns have become a decent seller for me and I learned several good points from the article.  I like the 5 lb. bag of sugar correlation, except for the fact that sugar doesn't come in 5lb bags anymore!  LOL

Grin Grin
5lb bags now weigh 4lbs and a 1/2 gallon of ice cream is 48oz

I really liked the article, most folks don't understand that humans are made of lots of watery mushy stuff that burns and steams away. Not much left after that.

I also can't stand the "shrinkflation" of every product out there, it's just nuts.

It has been 3 yrs and 3 months. Making her final resting place still seems daunting and a bit cruel, but I have collected some info, and will begin someday. I suppose it's best to just do it. I like the idea of it being split in the middle (?) without an opening at either end (?) It will definitely be walnut, and hopefully I can figure out how to put small pictures of her animals and her awards around the urn. Thanks Ron for the additional info, and the reminder that I should "get on the stick".

Thanks for the reply Ron, but I think they are stone pictures more suitable for flat work (?). I was thinking of something flexible, like maybe a decal, that may be more suitable to adapt to the urn curve.

Yes, they are ceramic cameos.

I know of a 3D printing process, but it is a single color. Some public libraries have 3D printers available for members to use.

As a funeral director for almost 45 years, I have to say that article is a great resource. Spot on!
