Policy Change (Long, I'm sorry)
Feb 12th, 2009 at 5:05pm

Well we've tried it and the administrative team has decided that all new registrations will be mandated to register with their real names, both first and last.  This is one of several actions that we are taking in order to reduce the number of spam registrations, hackers infiltrating our membership, and spoofers messing around with all of us in various ways.  So far it seems to be working.

On January 5, I asked for a voluntary change from screen names to real names.  Many of you played follow the leader after I changed my name to my real name.  The entire team appreciates you making that change.  Many of you have publicly and privately complemented this action.  Thank you for that.  Our only intent is to keep WR not only fun, but safe as well.

Now I'm asking for further action to be taken.  Many of you are still using screen names.  In a couple of weeks emails will be sent to members who have not changed their names yet.  In those emails there will be words like "Restricted" and "Blocked" and other words that don't sound so good.
If you could, please go ahead and change your screen names over to your real names.  The administrative team and I regret having to take this action, but greatly appreciate your willingness to help us with this matter.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled programing ...

You may not register with or change your email address to one from the domain @hotmail.com.

Change name on my profile. When I saved changes I got the above error message. Any one know why?

hotmail is one of those domains we have had to block because of the amount of spam that uses hotmail.  PM me with your particulars and I'll see what I can do for you.

Sorry Chuck, but the list includes hotmail, gmail, and yahoo.  The admin team can override this restriction on an individual basis.  However, it does cause problems like what you've run into down the road.  Looks like you've overcome the problems though.  Still, let me know if you need any help.

You know, sometimes it sure does pay to have a smart wife. When I explained the email problem, She gave me one of those "have you gone daft" looks and reminded me that we have our own website with my own email address on it. Problem solved. smiley=lolk.gif

Yeah Chuck, my daughter has that look and it's usually accompanied by 'You know Daddy, this is really quite simple' - which means 'I've shown you this 5 million times'. Grin

As someone who's an Admin on another forum, I can attest to the fact that the spammers, scammers, and trolls have really stepped up their efforts to get into forums. I fully understand the need to block certain e-mail providers like Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, and a few others. We do the same, but allow people in with those e-mail providers on a case-by-case basis. It's a bit more hassle for the members, but in the long run, it makes the forum much nicer for the members.

The real name rule is also another one we use, and it seems to keep people more civil when they know their name is associated with what they type. As WR grows, rules like this become more and more necessary, or else things can go downhill real quickly.  smiley=thumbsup.gif
