Newest wood haul- Mullberry!
Apr 1st, 2013 at 6:17pm

Had a few trees taken down at my office today. The arborist dropped two loads of Mullberry at my house. Smiley What's the word on Mullberry?
Tomorrow comes the maples! Smiley

I  have some Paper Mulberry that was given to me by a fellow WR member.  Have made a few pens, bowls, handles etc from it.  Has a yellow  color that finishes very nicely, occasionally will have reddish streaks in it.  Not as yellow as Osage Orange, not as hard on tools and I think has more character that OO.  This is the only Mulberry I have any experience with.

I do like the color of it. I cut a few logs into bowl and spindle blanks last night. It does look like the pith area (which I totally removed) is more unstable than some other woods. I made sure that I cut at least one inch to the sides of the pith.

Those pretty yellow ends will turn brown in a very short time.

I have seen it turn brown on the tree. Kinda like that too! I am cutting into blanks and sealing what I want to keep. The rest will be firewood. Embarrassed I am actually acquiring wood faster than I can properly store it, and I don't know any other woodturners in my area.

Mulberry is great!  It has a lovely color even as it darkens with UV exposure.  It's one of my favorites.
