Dynamics of wood grain...? (Read 973 times)

Dynamics of wood grain...?

Alright guys I've been hunting around for this information and can't quiet answer the question. When ever I see someone turning a bowl I see them with the bark still on...turning it from the side of the wood I don't understand this.

In my picture of these logs I my brain tells me to just saw them into discs since they're already round, yet I don't see anyone doing this, it's like they took a chunk out of the side of the log instead. Does this have to do with wood grain? I'd appreciate any input. Also still trying to indentify this stuff.

Reply #3 - Jan 18^th, 2014 at 3:16pm Derek , The best thing I ever did when starting was to go to "Woodturner.org". This is the American Association of Woodturners website. They have a feature " find a chapter" , you put in your location and clubs in your area are displayed. This will put you I touch with local turners who can help you with "hands on ".
