David Mills Pease settled in Northeastern Ohio in the early 1800s. By 1850 he had started making turned bowls and jars for sale. Most of the photos I've seen show the items made from plain maple. The originals are quite valuable.

I decided to try to replicate a "Peaseware" jar as a music box. I didn't have plain maple but had a nice piece of Butternut to work with. It houses an 18 note movement.

No. Butternut is rather light and colorless.

I used a diluted alcohol based stain (Laurel Mountain Forge - Nut Brown) and rubbed it back on the lathe with a scotchbrite pad (brown). I then used a coat of sealer, a black stain wash to color the grooves and, finally a friction polish & wax.
