However, I've done closed, too. It gives me an opportunity for colour in my design and it lets me use free offcuts from a local professional woodshop of many different species.

When I first started I had no idea where to get a bowl sized piece of wood.
I did what many do, I glued up a few pieces of 2x4 I had and it went from there.
I still like segmenting due to there being no size restrictions. Finding/buying large bowl blanks isn't always easy or cheap.
(I know, make friends with an arborist)
Other than size, I like being able to create my own patterns using my flatwork skills to hopefully enhance the look of a project.
THere's much more to it than that but that's the basics.

I've made one piece, a Beads of Courage Box. One of my friends even made me a sled for my bandsaw. The biggest hold backs that I have: 1. a shed full of Cherry, Walnut, half dozen burls..... 2. No funds to buy a drum sander

Posts: 190	Re: Segemnted Turnings Reply #5 - Aug 22^nd, 2018 at 1:36pm I suspect that I’d get bored gluing all the bits together but it’s a moot point anyway as I can’t really justify buying a planer thicknesser. I must say I have seen some impressive works with several hundred small pieces all glued together. They were open pieces and the ticket price in the studio I saw them was over £500.

I have only turned 2 bowls in the 12" range and both of them were segmented Walnut or Cherry. I think I enjoy the segmenting and making of a sled for the job better than the actual turning, and love the results. My Wife always find a great place to stand the item. So far I have a segment sled, a stave sled, and a bandsaw sled for making Celtic Knot items. Small bowls I have turned from solid including a raw edge Osage Orange 8" bowl. Plain wood bowls don't seem to draw my attention.
