"Many people use this type of pattern (larger of course) as a medallion in hardwood floors."
Ed, I was thinking about doing the same thing with this pattern. My house is not lined up with with any specific direction. It would be beautiful to put this pattern in the floor, not far from the front door, and in front of the grandfather clock, now I would know which way I'm looking out the window.
One will have to get creative in turning this piece, because of it's size.

It just dawned on me, that the floor medallion doe not have to be turned. It doesn't need a raised ring since it will be in the floor and needs to be flat.
Make a large compass to scribe the circular line, saw on a band saw, then use the disk sander to round it to the line and your done.
No lathe needed.

A router and a circle jig works well for doing that sort of thing, like cutting a large circle in the floor.
