Help me with problem. Please!
Mar 23rd, 2020 at 7:05pm

I am making my niece a segmented bowl and she wants a cross inlaid into the bottom of the bowl. I have tried using my router to carve a cross out but my hand, shakes and I make a mess out of it. I have the bottom already made and all the rings glued up. I sure could use some help with this.

Thanks!

Can you cut the bottom off, remake it and glue on a new one?
I don't know what tools you have

Ed, the segments are glued together but not glued to each other. The bottom is laying out by itself. More than likely I have the tools to do it.

You could appeal to your local woodworking clubs to see if anyone has a CNC router. I could do it, but I'm in the Great White North, so it's likely not a solution.

Failing that you could make a pattern out of pressboard and use a laminate trimmer with a bearing bit to cut the cross.

The bottom doesn't always need to be solid. You can piece together a cross pattern pretty easily.

One could assemble discrete pieces of the correct dimensions to make a template to pattern route with a plunge router.

I think a template and plunge router would be the easiest way.  You could practice and make adjustments using scrap wood without the all or nothing one shot drama.

I have lots of funny shaped scrap wood laying around.

I placed a cross and fish on a box for a friend.  I raised the box on a cove routed perimeter footing, creating a cavity (recess) on the underside, follow me? Then, i just made the fish and cross from contrasting wood anf glued them on. Looked very nice. Just a thought.

Template and router with pattern bit would be my choice. Or segment the bottom then the corners would be square not rounded.

For making something like a cross, a very simple shape, straight sides and 90 degree corners. Template routing may be overkill, as you'll most likely want/need to square up the inside corners by hand.
(template routing leaves inside corners the diameter of the guide bushing)
Segmenting a cross in a flat plane couldn't be easier and will provide square corners.
Depending on the size, mortising by hand is also straight forward.
If you decide to inlay a piece or pieces, I suggest to sand the edges of the inlay with a slight under-cut angle. This way the inlay gets tighter as it's tapped into the mortise.

you make a segmented base with a cross of contrasting woods.  If it must be inlayed, just add a solid sheet to the bottom,,, I'd prefer a complete cross showing on both sides of the base.

photo shows some bowl bases made with leftover segmented pieces...
