In watching that video, what got me was taking 3 foot diameter logs and reducing them to 1x1 strips and 1/4 sawn at that.

There didn't seem to be any consideration for waste or if that was the best use of that timber

During my days as a concrete worker, I think it was back in the 80's, the bottom fell out of the housing market, but all the lumber mills started to automate their plants. I got to work around the plywood mills, the glue lam mills, and the plain old lumber mills. Saw most of those machines. Always fascinated me at how fast they were. Could peel a 24 to 30 inch diameter fir log for veneer, down to a fence post in less than a minute. The big bandsaw would cut forward and backward. It was exciting when one of those big blades broke... Not sure if I can find it, but saw some thing similar to what I made where the guy was cutting diagonal sections of logs and his chainsaw pivoted.
