Stave Problem
Oct 14th, 2020 at 11:26am

Help needed. Working on a small staved bowl with 18 sides and splayed at 5 degrees. Have always used the woodgears chart but this only goes to 12 sided bowls. The formula is there but this 87 year old brain refuses to understand it. Sad Can someone give me the  Miter and Tilt angles for the 18 sides at 5 degrees?? Thanks much in advance, Geo.

Do you know of any one that has the Malcolm Tibbetts book," The art of segmented wood turning?" It has an appendix that gives an excellent  table of angles. I have used it on a great many of my stave turns. Never had a problem.

If not send me your e-mail address and I'll copy it and send it to you.

I would find  a good online compound angle calculator.
I often use this one.

18 sided vessel with straight sides (0 miter angle) has 10 degree bevel cuts to get us to 360
For an 18 sided vessel and 5 degree tilt (slope)
You get a bevel angle of 9.963 and a miter angle of 0.867

I forgot to mention,
When you're all set and have everything set up properly, make an extra stave and mark the miter and bevel angles so that you have a quick reference setup block for the next vessel.

I'm going to have to start buying from Woodpeckers to get that kind of precision! Wink

You keep trying don't you.  Grin

I just use an angle cube, lots of people sell them.
Watch out for the stated amount of precision NOT how many decimal points it has.
Example
Resolution:      0.1 degrees
Accuracy:      +/- 0.2 degrees
Repeatability :      +/- 0.1 degrees
OR
Resolution: 0.05 degrees
Accuracy: +/- 0.2
So who cares if you can read down to .05 degrees if it's only accurate to .2 degrees ?
This is why I still don't have a new one yet. Trying to find the least worst one of the bunch.

I finished all the staves and spacers using Ed's angles. Haven't glued any yet, but i still make 2 halves seperatly and sand them flat. Always works that way Smiley Like Ed says, the Lixie is only good for .2 degrees accuacy and the stave sled is not much better even when its set with a 5 inch sine bar.

FOr my miter angles I use a Incra miter 1000 hd. positive stops at each degree and a vernier scale for in between. Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register
Hope it all glues up for you.
I'm sure I'll hear it if it doesn't  Grin

I may have to look into that one Ed. You shouldn't put toys like that up here..... I don't have a tool buying problem, it is all for research...... I have heard of them, and know they make very precise tools...

IMO the Incra miter gauges are the end of the discussion. They just got it right.
Set it up once and you never have to find an angle, you just set it.
For someone who makes segmented pieces, it's a great option.
