Definitely great craftsmanship. Is the inner maple ring continuous, and what is the purpose of the sole diamond at 12:00?

Yes the inner ring is continuous
This is the last of five pieces I've made for my siblings as they each turn the big 60.
There are 60 small squares on the grid (one big one in the middle).
The diamond is from a piece of birds-eye maple that I've incorporated into each piece so far.
Now that it's down to me as the last one, I only have the scraps left.
A couple more photos of the process and an alternate rim that didn't work for this one but might just work for mine.

How do you keep the mahogany dust from staining the maple?

When I'm finish sanding, here's my process, by no means ground breaking or anything, just what works for me.
When working through the grits, I typically blow off with compressed air every other grit, I also reverse every grit change.
220 forward, 320 reverse, blow ff, 400 forward, 500 reverse, blow off
I usually stop there on a wood like mahogany, it's pores are a little open.
Then I wipe it down thoroughly with mineral spirits and let dry. I inspect and then use a scotchbrite pad to lift any loose fibers and debris. Depending on the piece, I may have to wipe it down again before applying the first coat.
Sometimes I'll put a sealer coat of finish on the maple ring before sanding the contrasting wood but these pieces all had to be sanded at once so it was a bit of a pain.
I didn't get much bleeding at all in the base grid area but there are some areas around the insert pieces in the rim I had to do a little filling and blending in. I had a bit more tear out than I liked from the mortising bit to deal with.

I've been away for a while doing some flat work.
This is a very pretty platter and good job Ed.
Just curious, what lathe are you using?

I'm not sure how that works. Are the two lathes tied together some way? If not, is this a stable situation?

I wasn't trying to confuse anyone,
My 1642 holds the work. The grizzly is at a 90 degree angle, ways running accross the end of the piece. All I'm doing is using the grizzly as an outboard tool holder, it is quite safe. This photo may clear things up
