Candle Cups
Nov 26th, 2022 at 6:42pm

Bought some bright brass cancle cups from Rockler, inside diameter is 7/8".  A typical diameter at the base of tapered candles seems to be 3/4".  The candle stands would be gifts, and for several reasons I don't want to try to fill the gap around the base of candles with melted paraffin.  I guess I can understand why the I D is 7/8" - try to accomodate both 3/4" and 1" diameters.  But the candle can't wobble if it might be lit.

A couple wraps of a thin strip of painter's masking tape seems an option, but I'd like to ask how others have made a 3/4" diameter candle secure in a 7/8" I D candle cup.  Thank you.

You can find brass sheet not too expensively and add a liner to the cup to bring it from 0.875 closer to 0.75. I've seen .025" thick, but you could do two turns with it to bring it down 0.100.

Of course, I've never done this, but it appears reasonable and non-flammable at first glance.

Plug it and re-drill it? A dowel or epoxy resin would work to plug the existing hole.

A strip of aluminium foil is a pretty common method to keeps tapered candles tight.

I was used to lighting the candle first, dripping some melted wax into the cut, then seating the candle. I wonder if that is how they are intended to be used???

There was a candle shop where we used to live that sold strips of wax.  Their purpose was to wrap around the bottom of tapers to give a tight fit if needed.   I'd probably just drip some wax into the cup to help hold it.

Thought I had an elegant solution - the initial 7/8" diameter hole for the candle cup I am making 1/2" deep, so drill a centered 3/4" hole another 1/4 or 3/8" deep.  Turns out the candle stand is too narrow just below the candle cup.

11" of masking tape 3/8" wide wrapped around a 3/4" diameter candle base makes for a snug fit, and the tape doesn't show.

I expect a few drops of melted wax would secure a 3/4" diameter candle, but customers may find after the candle has reached the candle stand that removing the candle base is displeasing.

I don't know how many you're making, but one suggestion is this.

A bushing or sleeve (can be cut from a length of tube or pipe) that's 3/4 ID and 7/8" OD (1/16" wall) would be the simplest solution. This is readily available in either metal or plastic. It would be a nice accessory to the candle sticks, rather than a length of tape.
