Improvements for Delta Band saw
May 22nd, 2023 at 5:58pm

HI, Have several Mesquite bowl blanks to cut and needed to change the blade on my band saw so figured it is a good time to do maintenance and evaluate. I have a Delta 14” band saw  bought in 1993 or thereabouts, no riser and stock except for the tension adjusting mech. Replaced the tensioning screw with an aftermarket  spring and threaded rod and wheel. Replaced the upper wheel tilting mechanism with identical looking part made of better metal than the original pot metal one, seems to work ok. I’m on the second set of composite guide blocks ( cool blocks) both upper and lower and made a magnet gizmo to keep the dust collecting Shute closed as the clip on original is too weak.
What is the general opinion of these additional “improvements”?
Tension releasing lever
Bearing replacement of cool blocks
Replacing the original vee belt with a link style belt
Thanks, Ed

my Delta 14 has a riser block, Carter tension lever and ball bearing guides, a stronger tension spring and a link belt. The link belt smoothes out the drive and the rest are nice to haves. The saw is powered by a 3hp motor that is capable of doing serious damage to the drive axle in the case of a hard jam, I tension the belt lightly enough so it acts as a sacrifice then I only have to repace 3 or 4 links. The tension lever makes it easy to release the tension to save the tires and retension the blade to the same spot. I'd buy them all again.

my 14" saw also has:
riser block
tires
bearing guides
tension spring
link belt
improved fence
quality blade

IMO, these are almost required on all 14" cast iron saws.

I like the Carter roller guides I put on my 14" Delta.  I did not do well with the Cool blocks.
