wet stone maintenance
Mar 5th, 2009 at 11:45pm

I bought a cheap set of carving tools from Harbor Freight thinking that I might try to put a decoration of some sort on a couple of boxes that I have turned. The tools are dull but have a bevel ground on them as a guide for sharpening.  They are small and it is hard to get a good edge on them with my bench grinder.  I thought I'd put a fine edge on them with an old wet stone that my dad used to use to sharpen pocket knives and the like.  Over the years this wet stone has gotten so dirty/greasy that it is useless in its present condition.  Embarrassed I've tried to clean it with sand paper but without much success.

Any suggestions on how to clean the surface of that stone to make it useful again?  Thanks.

Try some baking soda and water see if that helps.

I have some really old stones that where given to me. They had a hollow in the center and where pretty crusty.

I place a sheet of 240 wet/dry sandpaper on a plate of glass, added some water, then with the stone on top, I rubbed in a circular motion, adding water as needed until the stone was both clean and flat.

Wonder if dressing the wheel would help, if its a good wheel, you may be able to dress it it down enough to remove all the junk that is built up over the years.
