Project Ideas
Aug 4th, 2009 at 3:56pm

I wanted to tap into the infinite wisdom all who visit here regularly.  My wife and I are expecting our first child--A boy--in 2 months.  I have been racking my brain looking for ideas for projects.  A Crib and Dressers are out of my league, so I purchased them.  I turned a lamp and built a mirror/shelf. (pictures to come soon.)

What other ideas do you have for needed items.  Thanks for the ideas in advance.--Andy

There are a lot of good plans out the for good rocking horses or any other rockin animal. I even saw one for a rockin motercycle. It was beyond my skill level though. Ill stick with the classics.

Andy, when my wife was expecting our son, she said something to my dad about a time capsule kind of thing to place newspapers and other things from the day he was born into for him down the road.  He ended up making a bench that contains a box underneath the seat.  We've got several copies of the newspaper and many other items in there waiting for some point in his life when we'll open it up with him.  I'm pretty sure tears will be shed at that time, both mother and dad.

Thanks dad for the great gift all those nearly 8 years ago.

Wish I still had the plans for the rocking horse I did a few years ago- best plan I ever saw. If I come across them, I will pass them along. (you still have a few years for that one) Another option might be a changing table- not as involved as a crib, but will challenge your skills a little at a time so you will be more comfortable in future projects. One of my favorite items as a kid was a very small rocking chair- again here you have a few yrs to build your skills

Be careful with baby rattles, they can be a choking hazard and can splinter.

I made a toy box for my girls when they where young. It lasted them quite a while. There are hinges available that prevents the top from slamming shut. Worth while investment IMO.

Thanks for the ideas.  I just bought some wood for a toy box, and I think I will add a time capsule to it.  I like the idea of a rocking horse too.  I am a little worried about a rattle splintering.-Andy
