Hey Guys
I joined the forum a couple days ago and I just thought I'd introduce myself. I'm a high school student living in central texas and I live on a property surrounded by juniper wood.  Wood and woodworking has always fascinated me, but my actual woodworking was fairly infrequent. Recently I learned about turning, and since then I've been hooked. I only got my lathe (a dinky Shop Fox W1704) a couple days ago, but I've been reading as much as I can on turning from books and the internet (hence my interest in the forum). Today was my first day ever on the lathe, and I spent about two hours today getting used to tools on juniper blanks and then creating a small project. So here it is, an arbitrary chess piece ( sorry for the poor photo quality, taken with my mom's cellphone)

All the best

Hi Harrison, nice looking first attempt.
I remember back when I first started, my wife referred to my early pieces as "custom designed firewood".

ROFL: (Rolling on the floor laughing.) Typically used by people who are too lazy to press the rest of the keys on their keyboard needed to communicate in English.

Welcome Harrison. Based on your age, the content of your signature line, and the quality of your very first attempt, I'd say we have a master turner in the making! I look forward to watching you progress.

Welcome to the site Harrison. I can't wait to see the things to come from your shop. If you can join a turning club or get a mentor to guide you, you'll cut years off the learning curve. Watching the videos here is also a great resource! Smiley
