Got a new tool from 1920!!!
Jan 14th, 2014 at 8:05am

I had to spend two night out of town on business and yesterday I was looking through CL and found a 1920 Oliver 144 8" jointer.  It is all original with a 1/2 hp RI motor and case iron stand.  This thing weighs just over 800 lbs....yes you read that right eight hundred pounds.

Are you going for the complete Oliver line?

I'll have to check with my dad, but that looks a lot the same model my grandfather's machine is.  if so,the heavy frame makes it super smooth and stable.. getting the blades aligned can be a little fiddly...I recommend the magnetic setting jigs to help get them right....

Once you get it tuned in, it'll give you great results Smiley

Dennis, I think you might have the right idea. With the price of gold falling and the price of iron climbing, if the time comes when you are no longer able to turn....you will be a millionaire in the weight of iron alone Smiley

You mentioned the Nova.  I've had my heart set on having a big mustard monster ever since I got to play on one about a year or so ago, BUT..I watched a video on the Nova's yesterday and that rotating head sure looked handy.  And the price is quite different.

Hi Charlie, for what we are doing, the Nova 1625 fits the bill perfectly.  The bigger DVR is a great lathe but I've never worked on the mustard monster so I can't compare.

Harry, that is where I bought my Oliver 20-D lathe.  They are good to work with.

My wife and I got up at 5am this morning, went to our local breakfast haunt and had eggs over easy, hash browns, and toast, then drove 159 miles to Planwell MI. to pick up the Oliver. It is not very big but it like to kill us getting it out of the basement. We could carry the tables and fence and guard up the stairs and out to the truck, but the cutter head/motor combo requires a dolley. The base was heavier yet, but it was the stand that really took its toll. I don't know how much it weighs but it is a lot more than I thought based on its side. We had to attached it to the dolly so it was sticking out a lot and needed a LOT of leverage. We finally got it out to the truck after taking it slowly up the stairs.

We had to go to my brothers 51 birthday party when we got home so it is still out in the truck and I'll unload it tomorrow and post pics. To my great surprise, there are no cracks, no rust, plenty of grease on the table slides, the motor and cutter head turns freely without play that I can tell without my mic.
