The book ad DVD combinations by Richard Raffan are a constant educational tool for me, even after many viewings over a number of years.  I find most dvd's observational - watch a turning - but Mr Raffan's materials are packed with so much information that it can take several years of experience to recognize additional details.  For me that makes his materials the best.

A second recommendation would be the video library here at Woodturner's Resource.  They all have been previewed so you won't see unsafe or improper practices and techniques.

A third recommendation would be a local turning group, where you will always have mentors and the opportunity to see and perhaps test drive different equipment and tools before purchase.
