Before Your Computer Dies . . .

Last week. Bought a new notebook and paid the store to try to migrate over all the data. Surprisingly it worked. Then wanted to install all the programs I had purchased and put on the old notebook, without paying a second time. Email replies from a couple of the companies said I needed license # and sometimes other data from the old computer. Fortunately was able to coax the old notebook into booting up again, and was able to open the programs and write down the important info.

If you are the cautious type, write down all the critical info on any programs you have purchased and store in a folder, just in case.

I hear you on keeping track of serial numbers etc. One thing I also do is I have a box I keep all my source disks along with the serial number in it. If I download software to install, I first write it to a CD and include the serial number and that goes into the box also. If you have multiple computers, be sure to add which computer it was installed on.
That's my computer safety net.

Running it will produce a report of all your hardware and software, including licence numbers, serial numbers, etc.

I remember saying that about 8" floppy disks then again about 5-1/4" then the 3.5". Now laptops don't come with hard drives or cd/dvds. Punched paper tape was what I used for CNC programming in the early 80's. It was quite an improvement over punch cards!
