WTB or Trade for Cross Slide Vise
Sep 23rd, 2020 at 6:57pm

I am looking at cross slide vise for my drill press to do one light milling operation on my flutes.. I look at the ones online and wonder what is a good one.It would be on an old heavy Delta Rockwell drill press. I know ideally it would be good to have a light milling machine but cant justify the price. Thanks in advance!

Capacity and travel are going to determine the price to a certain extent.

You can get small ones with 4" of travel for $50-$60 (cheap) When the cross travel increases, so does the price. Three are other things that influence the price like the ways, gib screws, etc.
If you're trying to mount your flutes and drill a long line of holes, you may need a lot of cross travel.
You may be better off looking for a multi fiction or milling table. These have much more cross travel but no vise, you need to secure the work in your own way. Which can be better depending on what you're trying to secure.

I've tried doing what you're thinking about and it didn't work out too well.  The cross slide vise is great for holding and repositioning pieces for drilling holes.  It does not work well for milling.

For cutting flutes, I would try building a jig for the router.

For cutting flutes, I would try building a jig for the router.

This would be used for the holes, for flattening the top of the flute nest area and for cutting just a short 1/4" to 5/16" wide and approx. 1 1/4" long groove on top of the flute....Total travel on the flute would be 2" at the most

If you only require 2" of travel, a small 3" or 4" model will work.

The problem is usually with work holding and support. Trying to "mill" a 2" section on the clamped end of a long piece leads to problems. You'll need to support the wild end to secure it from dropping down and from vibration but it also needs to travel.
This is why I suggested a table.

Where are you located?  I have one I would trade for a piece of turning wood stock or something similar.  It is pretty heavy to try to ship.  I am in east Tennessee.
