Drooling yet???

When he opened his SUV and I saw them, I was really disappointed as they look really flat and boring,

I could see the birds eyes but...

So I got it into the store and... WOW!!! Smiley Smiley
They aren't flat as in they haven't been planed but that is nothing once on a lathe.

I now have 7 of these.  Like the proverbial kid in a candy store!!!

Very nice indeed
I have to say, that wood is almost on the verge of being too busy.

Well, he**. i might as well split it up for kindlin'!! Shocked Grin

The more I look at, the more I see it as almost art instead of wood.

Instead of a bowl  from wood, more like a slightly curved platter, round or square so it shows off the pattern without someone looking at it and seeing a bowl.

It's been almost 40 all day and rainy but now it is to get REALLY windy.. gusts up to 50mph and down to 8º overnite!!!
All that rain will be nicely slick for morning accidents.

Maine.

I just meant that some if it's impact can get lost when you use too big of a piece.
If you need to stand back to take it all in, it can have the effect of blending  into a broad pattern and can lose the intricacies of the wood.
Sometimes, it can be better to use it as smaller accent pieces, Jewelry box, an inlay of some kind. that sort of thing. Resawing to get some book matched pieces would be another good option IMO
If you're going to turn it, I agree with the platter option.
Have fun and don't waste it

You are right. Too big and it is lost. Smiley

That's why the whole board feel overwhelming, but closing in on certain areas makes the eyes stand out.

Nice find Ralph, I’m curious of the thickness of the pieces though. I’m seeing a high end cutting board there in the piece shown.

Buck,

2 1/8" thick.

I think if I cut them right, I can make front and rear bumpers for my car!!

Like they do with their pickups up here in Maine.
