Dust collector upgrade
Apr 13th, 2022 at 1:11pm

I bought a Dust Deputy a few months back and have not been satisfied with it.
The other day I checked Facebook market place and a guy had a Jet DC 650M up for sale, listed for $250 like new.
I contacted the seller and went and had a look at it yesterday. The seller ended up being Ford Thomas. Ford Thomas is a local furniture maker and does some beautiful work.
Ford is a really nice guy and very friendly. He’s in the process of moving from an old wear house in downtown Baton Rouge, to his new shop in Jackson, LA.
We talked, well he talked and I scribbled on my note pad because, most people can’t understand me when I try to talk.
Ford gave me some logs, Cherry, maple and walnut that had been in his shop for years.
All I had was 20s on me so I gave him $260. He didn’t have any change and handed me back a 20.
He invited me to come visit him at his new shop once he gets moved in.
I still had my bowls in boxes, in my truck from the weekend. I took out a nice Maple bowl and gave it to Ford as a gift and to say thank you.
Now all I need to do is set up a hose for the dust collector.

That is a good unit but check carefully on the filter, it may be rated for only  5 micron or at best a 1 micron particle size.    A filter with a MERV 15 rating is usually recommended.  Wynn Environmental  sells cannister filters that can fit most of the major brands,

Still going to be wearing a mask when working.
I do plan on getting a better filter for it, but will wait until my new shop is built.
I had a carpenter come by today, hopefully we’ll get started building my new shop in a week or so.

Great score Lee.   You saying you scribbled on a notepad because they couldn't understand you made me think of our family reunion a few years ago.  I have several cousins and their families down in Jeanerette & New Iberia.  We joked about needing subtitles like on Swamp People so we could understand them.  One in his deep south Louisiana drawl said.  "Now Billy, we don't have an accent!"

Some people are like slinkies... totally worthless but it puts a smile on your face when you push them down the stairs.

First up grade on the DC system would be a pleated paper filter. They work FAR better than the cloth bags, and I do mean FAR better! That may work for a central system if your shop is small, or you can move it from machine to machine.

Try talking with some people in Gramercy, LA. They have under 4000 residence and it’s like some have their own language.
But me needing a note pad to write on is not due to an accent. I have nerve damage from radiation treatments for tonsil cancer. I can talk, but everybody acts like they can’t understand me.
A while back, Ralph and I tried talking on the phone, when I was getting ready to ship him some wood. We ended up having to communicate through email.  Grin

The new shop will most likely be 16’x12. With a better filler this dust collector should do fine. I’ll look into the bag filters. Thumbs Up
