I have been wondering about this for some time, can the carbide tips for machining steel and other metals be used in woodturning?

Yes.

Many of the carbide bits incorporated in wood turning tools were originally manufacturer for metal working.

You can use whatever tool does the job.  The carbide police won't cite you for crossing arbitrary lines.
