Make sure you own the domain if you use the same company to register that you use to host.  A friend moved his domain from a host that was down more than it was up, only to find a week later that the old host repo'ed the domain because they were the registered owners, not the person that asked to have it registered.  They wanted $2500 to release the domain name to him.  When he wouldn't pay the blackmail, they started using the site to sell competing products.  He is in court over it right now as he is the trademark and copyright holder of the name.

Some one with more knowledge of the registration process might be able to explain this better.

Jim's right

That is what happened to turnwood.net. When I tried to gain ownership they told me they wanted $4000.

I register all my domains at godaddy, and use downtownhost.com.

Vaughn mentioned bluehost.com, I just researched them and they look pretty good

Very good points, Jim and Doug. Definitely need to read the fine print on that sort of thing. I know I own mine, but you do have to watch out for crooked registrars.

I only use Godaddy for registering my domain name.  I use others to host my web pages.. as others have said. Cost me around $6.

Kind of off but yet on topic, if any of you guys and gals need help with website/design/development/setting up, please let me know.  For my paying job I am a systems administrator and I do some web work on the side.  Please feel free to send an email/message to me if you guys have any questions about that stuff.  I would be more than willing to help out.

Looks like the base GoDaddy site is going to be about $32.00.  I might be missing something, but if I already have a PayPal account, I would think that I could use their shopping cart and checkout and not have the shopping cart from GoDaddy.  With theirs it looks like you have to get their SSL certificate (another $30) as well in order to take credit cards.  And that doesn't include the Standard US Merchant account ($60) to accept credit cards.  All that is included with PayPal.  Or am I missing something?

Well, Doug, if you're missing something we may be in the same club.  As I see it, I can open a free BLOG site (e.g. Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register) and include a link to my PayPal account and accomplish the same goal.

I have a blogger account, George, but I haven't examined the fine print yet.  Can you actually have a free blog and sell something from it?  Or, do you have to get a business blog that has a fee?  I dunno.

Sure, Ron.  And I've found the place on Blogger to do that.  I was referring to the legality of it.  Would Blogger allow me to sell from my free site?
