Cell Phone Camera Quality
Sep 18th, 2016 at 10:40am

With Ron's recent heads-up posting on the Calendar Subject my novice/unknowning camera mind makes me curious if today's Apple, Samsung and such phones have camera's that would handle the requirements needed for a Calandar photo?
I'm sure this is an easy question for some forum members- Thanks

Short answer is yes.
While mostly what you hear is Megapixels, that's not what's the most important.
A cell phone camera my have high technical specs but it is limited by it's physical size. Basically the lens is too small to let in enough light.
These cameras have come a long way and are better at overcoming there physical limitations, but as with any photo of this type (product shot) you need the proper amount of light.
I have a Samsung S7, I believe it has a 8 megapixel camera (which is the same as my first digital camera)
I can post a sample photo using my phone if you would like.

Photo not needed Ed , Thanks for the reply post which is a good one. The cameras on the phones now are quite simply " impressive " as a person looks back through the last decade on point and shoot  camera's and the last 5 yrs on the phone camera's.

A decent tripod would make a major difference in the quality of a smartphone's photo's too.

Definitely

For those who do use a cell phone for this, or any other project.
If you don't have a tripod, at least use a chair or ladder or something to steady you and your phone. It can make a big difference in the final quality and makes it much easier to retake a photo having a fixed shooting position to return to.
Remember, the cleaner or clearer the original photo is, the better it will look when blown up to fit the calendar size.

Cell phone images are great for images posted on the web and it ends there.

I've yet to see a image from a cell phone that I would consider print quality.

One of the problems isn't the 8meg image the phone makers proudly like to promote, its the teeny tiny lens that's usually dirty and/or scratched.

Another problem is that the cell phone's owner needs to make sure they are shooting at the highest resolution possible. Most people don't know how to change this setting or even know that they can.

And another problem is some phones like to compress or reduce the image's resolution for emailing making a so/so image worse.

So the long answer is no.

There is no way one can equate a phone camera with a REAL camera.

One is a phone that has a tiny camera in it and the other is a CAMERA designed solely for the purpose of taking photos.

You want good quality, use good quality. Smiley

If you only have a phone to shoot images, then ask a friend to shoot it for you with a REAL camera.
